Langevin Statement On Federally-Funded Stem Cell Research

Statement

Date: Dec. 2, 2009

Congressman Jim Langevin today offered the following statement regarding the first-ever approval by the National Institutes of Health of the use of embryonic stem cells in federally-funded research:

"The promise of embryonic stem cell research took a giant leap forward today. Since President Obama signed the executive order in March lifting the Bush Administration's ban on this important research, I have looked forward to hearing this news. These stem cell lines were obtained under stringent ethical guidelines and derived from embryos left over by couples undergoing infertility treatments, and they can now become part of cutting-edge research that carries hope for millions of Americans. I am excited to follow the progress of these experiments and to one day realize the full potential of this science."
